We usually use Pendrives and Hard Drives to carry data and utilities from one computer to another. But there are still lots of files or folders or you can say movies etc. that we want to carry with us but we can’t just because we don’t have enough portable storage on us.
For example: You have lots of movies and other important softwares stored on your office PC. Obviously you can’t carry all of them with you. Now let’s think the smart way. You don’t need to carry your files becasuse you can access them by turning ON your office PC from your home. Sounds Crazzy! Isn’t it?
It’s not that easy task but still not that tough either.
Once your Office PC is on, you can access it using Remote Desktop Connection or TeamViewer or any other Utility software. In this article I am going to explain, how to setup your computer to wake on LAN. You just require some changes to BIOS, and Device Manager. Now, Let’s start:
1. Setup the BIOS
Goto BIOS Screen by pressing DELETE or any other specified key to enter BIOS Setting.
Now go to Power tab and click on Automatic Power ON.
Goto Wake Up On LAN and press Enter and Select Enabled.
Now goto Exit tab and select Save Changes And Exit. When prompted for confirmation selectYes.
2. After setting up BIOS, we need to make some changes in Computer Management also.
Right-click Computer (or My Computer or This PC) icon on desktop and select Manage.Computer Management will open.
Goto Device Manager and double-click on Network Adapters.
Double-click on your Network Adapter, it will show you it’s Properties. In Properties window, goto Advanced tab. If you don’t know which one is your adapter, check your connection Properties.
Here we need to change two things.
1) Enable Shutdown Wake Up (This will help Over LAN).
2) Enable Wake on Magic Packet (This will help Over WAN).
Open WOL (Wake On LAN) from desktop shortcut and Enter IP Address of the Computer you want to turn on, in the field provided at bottom and click on Check button to check the status of the PC. If you receive a message saying, “The PC with IP is off”, enter that IP address in field provided on top and click Get MAC. Check if the MAC address is same as of the computer you want to turn on. If MAC adddress is right, click on Turn On PC. The target computer will be started.
Enjoy! Now you can turn on and Access your computer anywhere.
